When buying art, they maintained a few strict rules.  Each piece had to be affordable.  It had to fit in their apartment.  It had to be of a size that could be carried home by subway or taxi.  They vowed never to sell any artwork in their collection.  They collected to enrich their own lives with art they found to be beautiful.
